City’s business community advocating for dangerous goods route around Lloydminster

Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce suggests creating a dangerous goods route around the City for safety precautions.

Executive Director for the Chamber of Commerce Serena Sjodin says that the dangerous goods route is a policy renewal that has been on the books since 2012. She adds that it is important to have a route outside Lloydminster to protect the safety of residents.

“Really the importance of a dangerous goods route is to not have those hazardous goods going through our main corridors, highway 16 and highway 17 because if there was an accident it could be catastrophic.”

This is one of the policy resolutions the Chamber is focusing on for 2018 and will need the support of the City to make happen. Sjodin says there needs to be a lot of work done before this comes to fruition.

“To actually create the dangerous goods route there will be required to redo some of the road infrastructure and widen the turns. It’s not currently friendly for semis to make turns on these roads outside of Lloydminster.”

Their recommendations for the City include creating a committee to assess the need for a dangerous goods route, updating and enforcing by-laws around dangerous goods and creating road infrastructure around the City for the route.
