Lloydminster’s emergency measures will see an update to better align with the province of Alberta’s.
The Emergency Management Bylaw took a step forward in City Council Monday by being granted a first reading to introduce the new updates. Mayor Gerald Aalbers says that recent natural disasters, such as the Fort McMurray wildfires sparked the update.
“Emergency management is an ongoing process and as we’ve seen disasters all over Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan in the last couple years, it’s important to ensure that everything is up to date in the policy direction.”
The last policy update for emergency management was five years ago. Aalbers says that this is a bylaw that needs regular attention to ensure proper policies and procedures are followed.
“Some bylaws can simply go a long time, other bylaws need much more regular attention. This one came across that it definitely needed a little attention and that’s what it was receiving.”
The City follows Alberta’s emergency measures on both sides of the border and the new policy will align with the Alberta Emergency Management Act.
