The Lloydminster Rescue Squad is teaming up with trades classes from Lloydminster Comprehensive High School to make their new permanent building a reality.
Chief Norm Namur says this new building will give the Lloydminster Rescue Squad something they haven’t had in their over three-decade existence.
“For the last 33 years, we’ve been kind of moving around from building to building. We’ve never had a place that just has the A/C and the privacy, so this new office is going to give us the privacy, its going to give us to come in the winter and not freeze, and in the summer not fry.”
Namur adds that this will help them plan for the expanding number calls for search and rescue, create stability for long-term decisions and be somewhere to debrief after calls.
All of the construction and electrical work will be done by classes at LCHS, with JWS Inspection providing guidance and oversight. Deputy Chief Ryan LeBlanc says that he originally brought building their office up half-jokingly with the construction class, but when the students jumped at the chance they found a way to make it happen.
“It’s going to give [the students] a lot of life experience, with JWS helping every step of the way. They get the feel of a real-life construction site built for a client, where they come in and inspect your work. And it’s not only the construction class, this is also going to involve the electrical classes as well.”
Leblanc also says he is thankful to the LCHS and several local businesses coming together to provide building materials because they would not have been able to afford it without the community assistance. The Squad is also encouraging other businesses to help make the dream a reality by helping with electrical material and carpeting items.
The new building is being built at the High School right now and will be moved to a new location in mid-June.
