A new music and movement program coming to Mother Teresa school

Students at Mother Teresa Early Childhood and Education Centre will have the chance to learn outside the classroom with a new program focused on body awareness.

The program will partner with the Alberta Ballet to bring in an instructor to teach students age appropriate dances, as well as adding a live piano accompaniment from the schools music program. Principal at Mother Teresa Sheila Jurke says that the program will benefit the students by allowing them to experience rhythm, feelings and ideas through dance.

“Because we do have a lot of children under the age of seven in our school we do a lot of play based learning, inquiry based learning so this is another piece of that type of learning for us, where children can be now expressing themselves through movement.”

The program will be an extension of the schools learning vision of developing children’s spiritual, academic and social competencies. Jurke says that the program will be available to all students, including pre-kindergarten.

“The nice thing about being able to expose children at a young age to dance is that we can increase the exposure to more children who maybe would not otherwise be able to experience dance.”

The program will be available in September.
