Lloydminster Selected as Canada Games Torchbearer City

Lloydminster will need to determine who will carry the 2019 Canada Games Torch in the City.

The Games are the largest youth sports tournament in Canada, and will see thousands of athletes competing in over 150 events. Before the event kicks off the Canada Games Torch will be ran across Canada, and will visit the Border City on January 9th along the route from Halifax to Red Deer.

Lloydminster was selected through a process that saw several cities across the country apply, and the Games Chair Lynn Radford says the City exemplified what they were looking for.

“Our mission is to give a life changing experience to all participants, and our vision talks about innovation, frontier spirit, inclusiveness, collaboration, those kinds of things. When you really get into the collaboration and innovation, we thought that Lloydminster really lived those types of values.”

Radford adds that being a Torch Bearing City not only instills community spirit, but also fosters a sense of unity through sport.

The Games have opened applications to be a Torch Bearer and say they will need 10 to 15 from the Lloydminster area. Radford says applications are open to the public, and it is a simple process to nominate both online and in person.

“You’ll see a little icon that flashes up about the torch, and they can go on there and nominate. They can nominate themselves, they can nominate a community member they feel should have this well deserved honour. Or if they’re not too technical savvy, they can go down to the MNP office and they will help them along with it.”

Nominations will be open until the end of June and Torchbearers will be announced in September.
