City moves forward with Vision Zero Project

Lloydminster is looking to eliminate the number of road fatalities with the Vision Zero Project.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers says vision zero will play huge rule in Lloydminster going forward.

“No one wants to see a fatality on our streets and that’s the drive with Vision Zero. Accidents do happen, but if we can have a minor fender bender rather than a major collision that’s another goal of Vision Zero.”

Vision Zero has already received $17,000 in grant funding from the province of Alberta and has now added stakeholders to the project. Stakeholders include the City, RCMP, Lloydminster Handivan Society, Lloydminster Public School District, Lloydminster Catholic School District and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We’re a very busy City. We have a by-provincial highway that connects the country, basically runs east west through our City and our south highway that connects the provinces. So traffic is something we’re not going to go away from, but if we can enhance it to make it better and safer that’s our intent,” says Aalbers.

The City will appoint a member of Council to the stakeholder group in next week’s Council meeting.
