Chamber of Commerce awarded 2017 Chamber of the Year

The Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce has been awarded the Chamber of the Year award for 2017.

Executive Director Serena Sjodin says the recognition shows their members that they are progressive in their vision and goals.

“Our members are what drives us. They give us our direction of what we should be advocating for and working towards. The whole reason we’re here is to support our members.”

Sjodin says advocacy is what helped them stand out in the crowd.

“For this last year some of the areas that we focused really hard on that we think contributed to this award include our carbon levy advocacy that we did last year, where we received $5 million in grants for our Lloydminster Alberta fuel retailers.”

Sjodin adds that they have taken the lead in the province on advocating for reducing methane emissions by 45 per cent set out by the Government of Alberta, which has the potential to impact the economy.

The chamber has also held various events in the past year, including the launch of their Chamber on Tap, where they interview influential business people at networking events.

“We’ve also held a marijuana in the workplace workshop, where employers could bring their drug and alcohol policy to be reviewed by an HR professional so that they were prepared for the legalization of marijuana,” says Sjodin.

The award was given out at the Alberta Chamber Conference held in Grand Prairie last week.
