Jack Kemp celebrates Aborignal Day

Students and community members gathered at Jack Kemp School to celebrate Aboriginal Day.

The event included the Cree Club singing the national anthem, a drum circle and various styles of dances being performed by students, including the chicken and round dances.

Kindergarten Teacher Sarah Studer says the day recognizes the importance of Aboriginal cultures in the community.

“To celebrate and recognize the unique heritage, diverse cultures and the contributions of Frist Nations, Inuit and Metis.”

Grade 6 Student Kailey Starr was one of the dancers participating in the event. She says that she has been dancing since she was six years old and was excited to take part in the assembly.

“That I get to show everyone what I do on summer breaks.”

Studer says the day creates a sense of belonging for everyone in the school.

“It’s so important, especially for kids who have not been introduced to it to experience it and especially for our First Nations, Inuit and Metis students to be able to be able to share their gifts.

Aboriginal Day will take place on June 21.
