City picks location for Canada 150 mural

The exterior west wall of City Hall will be the location for the Canada 150 mural.

A legacy project that was approved by City Council in February will celebrate the country, as well as the community in Lloydminster. The mosaic will be a culmination of tiles reflecting an image of a train. Mayor Gerald Aalbers says it’s a great spot for a legacy project.

“People can access it from [Highway] 16 relatively easy. City Hall, we have the monument out front, we have the border markers just out in front of the building. So being on the backside will be able to get some publicity and make sure people are aware that they should stop here as well.”

Each tile will be sponsored by a community group or school. Funding for the project has not started, but Aalbers says now that they have a location it will be easier to raise money.

“There are some people in the community and community organizations that have identified that they would be interested. The schools are engaged now we can start that discussion and get some information out there and say this is what we need to do, this is what we’d like to raise and this is where we want to go.”

The mural will cost about $15,000 and Aalbers says he hopes the project will be completed in the summer of 2019.
