Lloydminster Liners players participating in Alberta Summer Games

Lloydminster will be represented at the 2018 Alberta Summer Games with four player and two coaches. The Lloydminster Liner U 16 girls are part of this year’s softball team participating in the games alongside other sports such as lacrosse, rugby, swimming and beach volleyball.

The games officially kicked off in Grand Prairie with opening ceremonies taking place Thursday night. The actual sports portion of the games start Friday and run through Sunday. Each sports team is broken down into zones that represent different regions in the province. Lloydminster is in zone 7 along with Vermilion and Provost.

Assistant Coach Emily Zerr says they are not too sure about there competition going into the tournament.

“There are some bigger regions that have pretty developed softball programs. We’re lucky actually in Lloydminster we have a softball academy at Holy Rosary High School. Some girls have been playing all winter, but some of the bigger regions like Edmonton and Calgary could put out some strong competition.”

Zerr is participating for her second time in the games with the first time being a player on the team.

“So it’ll be a great learning experience to be able to coach the girls and see the other side of the game, as well as participate in the games again.”

She adds that she hopes the team will medal, but more importantly make memories.

The team will begin their tournament on Friday, playing their first game at 10:30 a.m. then again at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.

“We will play three round-robin games then after that will be playoffs and it depends on the outcome of the first three games who we will play in our next playoff game.”

The team left Thursday morning and will be gone for four days before returning Sunday night.
