Fuel Good Day to raise money for school breakfast programs

Lloydminster Co-op is bringing back an initiative that donates to both Lloydminster School Division’s breakfast programs. The second annual Fuel Good Day will see five cents per litre of fuel sold at all three Lloyd Co-op gas bars given to the programs.

Vice President of Operations Leanne Hawes says last year they raised $6,500, which was split between both school divisions. This year the event will raise funds for rural schools as well with charity barbecues being held at each gas bar.

“Those charity barbecues, the funds from all three of those are going to be split between some rural schools and their breakfast programs. We have Neilburg, Marsden, Kitscoty and Lashburn all coming to host a barbecue.”

Hawes says they are trying to spread the funds to all breakfast programs in the area.

“If a student arrives at school hungry, their attention won’t be focused on their classwork or teacher that’s why we offer breakfast programs at all our schools. These programs allow students to get the necessary nutrition and energy they need to learn,” said LPSD Director of Education Todd Robinson in a statement.

18 Street Crossing gas bar located on Highway 17 south, Ironwells gas bar on Highway 16 east, and Hampton Square gas bar on Highway 16 West will all be participating in the event on September 18.

Hawes says they chose to donate to breakfast programming because it positively impacts the entire community.

“The school divisions were very appreciative of the money that was donated. When we started looking at it again we thought this is something that we can do that is inclusive of a lot of people in terms of being able to come in and make a donation whether it’s in five litres or 50 litres or a 100 litres.”
