City improves rec facility access for AISH, SAID recipients

City Council has approved implementing a new program for low-cost city recreation facilities. The Recreation Access Program (RAP) allows low-income residents or persons receiving Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) or Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) to qualify for discounted memberships and admission.

Facilities allowing this access include the Servus Sports Centre, the Bioclean Aquatic Centre, the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre and the Lloydminster Outdoor Pool. This comes as council approved an amendment to the Recreation Access Policy at their March 11 meeting. The policy originally set the threshold for low-income access to recreation facilities at the Statistics Canada Low-Income Cut-Off at $17,536.00 annually.

This originally excluded those receiving AISH support who come in at $20,220.00 annually. With the policy amended, those receiving AISH may qualify for a discount on memberships and admission at Lloydminster recreation facilities. Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the RAP is part of the city’s commitment to building supporting healthy lifestyles for everyone.

“Our Council believes that families managing through financial limitations should not face barriers to recreation and cultural opportunities. The new Recreation Access Program reflects our community’s long-standing commitment to supporting healthy, active lifestyles for all who call Lloydminster home. We hope to see qualifying individuals take advantage of these discounted rates,” says Aalbers.

Information on RAP applications and eligibility criteria is online at www.lloydminster.ca/rap. Forms may also be requested at any City of Lloydminster recreation facility. For more information call (780) 875-6184 extension 2909 or 2919, or email [email protected].
