Ovarian cancer survivors gearing up for Walk of Hope in Vermilion

Supporters of the fight against ovarian cancer are getting ready to gather in Vermilion for the Walk of Hope.

The walk is held in over 45 communities across the country, to raise money for the fight against Ovarian Cancer.

The walk will be taking place in Vermilion Provincial Park on Sunday, September 13, at 10 a.m. Walk participant Danette Belanger says the walk is about celebrating the patients and survivors.

“I think [when] families are going through the battle of ovarian cancer, so much of it is wrapped up in the survival part of it all, and the battle part, and the emotional part of it all, whereas the walk is trying to put that all aside and to celebrate the strength and the obstacles that families and friends have overcome,” Belanger said.

She also says that she hopes the walk will take on a regional appeal.

“Having a walk so close to our community, I think if we can band together in surrounding communities and have one walk location that supports all of the surrounding communities, I think that the greater numbers put toward one walk like that is better than spreading it out a little more thinly,” she said. “We would like to see word spread about Vermilion hosting the Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope and have people attend from all the surrounding area, as it’s a disease that affects so many people.”

Anyone interested in supporting or registering for the walk should go to ovariancancerwalkofhope.ca.
