Vermilion RCMP have arrested an Edmonton man on several charges. Just before noon on May 1, the Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a dangerous driver on Highway 16 at Highway 893. Immediately afterwards, a second complaint came in of a stolen Dodge truck matching the description of the driving complaint. The vehicle was found a short distance away but evaded police by travelling through fences and off-road.
Mounties quickly found the vehicle again abandoned in a field. Police Dog Services from both Lloydminster and Cold Lake successfully tracked the suspect to a wooded area where he surrendered without incident. Forty-seven-year-old Curtis Dean Schaaf of Edmonton has been charged with 13 offences, including 2 counts of theft over $5,000, dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, 4 counts of possession of property obtained by crime, 3 counts of mischief and possession of break in instruments.
Schaaf was wanted on a Canada wide warrant for violating conditions of his parole. Police recovered a notable sum of Canadian and foreign money. If members of the public are missing a collection of currency like this, they’re asked to contact the Vermilion RCMP at (780) 853-4441. Schaaf has been remanded in custody and will appear in the Vermilion Provincial Court on May 6.
