UPDATE: Amber Alert avoided, charges laid in Meadow Lake

UPDATE: Charges have been laid in connection with a serious domestic assault investigation in Meadow Lake yesterday. The 36-year-old male has been charged with a number of offences, including overcoming resistance, aggravated sexual assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and breach of recognizance.

He appeared in court in Meadow Lake this morning and has been remanded into custody. He will make his next court appearance on May 13 at 1:30 p.m. by video at Provincial Court in Meadow Lake. The name of the suspect will not be released to protect the victim’s identity.

The Meadow Lake RCMP avoided an Amber Alert after finding the victim and suspect. After a serious assault was committed at a home in Meadow Lake, the suspect entered another residence and took a 3-year-old girl. Investigators found an Amber Alert would be necessary.

As the RCMP was about to issue the alert, Mounties found a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle 8 km south of the town. The child was found safe and the 36-year-old male suspect was arrested without incident. The young girl has since been reunited with family, and the woman who was injured in the serious assault was taken to the hospital for her injuries. An investigation into both the assault and potential alert is ongoing.
