4-H Expo to showcase best in youth agriculture

The Lloydminster 4-H Expo is coming to show off the best-in-show for another year.

The event brings in young farmers and ranchers from around the area to showcase their skills and operations. This year will feature a multitude of different projects, including beef and dairy operations, horse shows, cooking, riflery and newly added oxen exhibits.

Agriculture Manager for the Lloydminster Exhibition Ground Sydney Lake says 4-H gives kids great opportunities to learn about farm operations, and show off their accomplishments to the public.

“All of them will be here throughout the weekend and they’re always super excited to tell you about their projects and what they’ve been working on. They love introducing you to their animals.  It’s always really fun for the public to come check out. ”

In addition to showing off their skills, the 4-H club has another goal this year: expansion. This year’s Expo is also known as “Country Roads to City Streets.” Lake explains that this could help kids and teens in urban centres learn about the grassroots origins of their food, and help develop their budding interest in agriculture as well.

“4-H is critical. It gets kids involved at a young age, and if you can get them while they’re young you have a better chance of them sticking with it and pursuing a career in agriculture. ”

This year’s 4-H Expo runs from June 1st to 3rd.
