City Hall proclaims Culture Days

The City of Lloydminster is encouraging everyone to Celebrate Peace this weekend.

The city has declared Culture Days from Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27, to celebrate the province of Saskatchewan’s history. City councillor Linnea Goodhand says celebrations like these are important.

“It’s absolutely critical,” Goodhand said. “Culture is an important component to any kind of thriving community. If you lose your sense of identity, you sacrifice a lot by doing that, and when you have a lot of diversity, it takes a lot of effort to make sure everyone is recognized and included and celebrated in their own way. And so it’s about learning, and it’s about enjoying, it’s about being introduced to new ideas, and new cultures, and Lloydminster places a high premium on that.”

The city has planned a day of free activities planned at the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre on Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is Celebrate Peace, and General Manager of Cultural and Social Services Patrick Lancaster says the activities were picked with that in mind.

“Some of the activities tie directly into the theme, such as how to write ‘hello’ in different languages,” Lancaster said. “We’re trying to appeal to a bit of a multicultural crowd, and with that you’ll see some different displays and art that reflect the diversity of the community in Lloydminster.”

Other activities include pinwheel making, painting the city’s outdoor pianos, and the opening of the Discovery Art Show.
