Consort RCMP warn public of phone scam

Consort RCMP is encouraging the public not to fall for a common phone scam.

The RCMP say they have received several reports of a scam in which a caller claims they are contacting the person on behalf of Revenue Canada, and then says that the recipient of the call owes taxes. They then attempt to set up payment over the phone. Some callers even threaten to issue warrants for the person’s arrest or seize their property, and tell them that their bank accounts have been frozen.

The RCMP says that Revenue Canada does not operate that way. They encourage anyone receiving those calls to contact their local RCMP detachment or visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
