Mural unveiled for 2019 Youth Graffiti Clean-up

The results of a summer-long project for local youth have been unveiled for the city to enjoy. The 2019 Youth Graffiti Clean-up has come to a close and leaves behind a mural over the city’s old water treatment plant.

Since the beginning of July, the city’s Family and Community Support Services has partnered with the Lloydminster Community Youth Centre, Art Soul Life Creative Studio, and Home Depot to beautify the former water treatment plant. Duane Brown, store manager of Lloydminster’s Home Depot, is proud to help youth make community improvements.

“These projects are so in line with the Home Depot values, and we’re just so proud to be a part of it,” says Brown.

Volunteers from the LCYC included more than a dozen people giving more than 130 hours of their time towards the project. Aidan Voss is one of those young volunteers who helped paint and is pleased to see the finished product.

“It feels good because it looks better than the old building with all the graffiti on it,” says Voss.

Kerian Chomey is another volunteer who dedicated his summer to help with the project. Chomey is pleased with the design and says it feels good to help the community.

“It felt nice, like really good, to be able to help with all these people doing something for the community. I don’t really do much for the community, because I’m doing other stuff,” says Chomey.

Patrick Lancaster, manager of Social Programs and Services with the city of Lloydminster, is very happy with the mural. Lancaster feels the mural greatly represents the community and says the kids worked very hard to achieve it.

“We’re very impressed with the progress that the kids made working on the project this year. They got a lot of work done, they worked really hard each session, and they made tremendous progress each time,” says Lancaster.

Lancaster confirms that the city will be looking around to find other sites in need of graffiti cleaning for next year’s graffiti clean-up.
