Lloydminster unemployment rates drastically different on both sides

The unemployment rates for both sides of the Lloydminster region continue to pull away from one another. While Albertans appear to be finding work in the Border City, the Saskatchewan side was struggling with more job losses in August.

The Alberta economic region of Camrose-Drumheller saw its unemployment rate fall almost an entire percentage point from July to 5.6 per cent. That rate is not adjusted for seasonal employment. The region also continues to hire more than other areas in Alberta. Last month, Camrose-Drumheller had the highest employment in the province after having the lowest from April to June 2019.

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert and Northern region in Saskatchewan saw a large rise in unemployment in August. The region sat at 7.5 per cent, unadjusted for seasonality which is a 0.6 per cent surge from July. The region has had the highest unemployment rate in the province for the past five months.

Overall, Saskatchewan saw a rise in employment in August.  The province’s rate dropped just under a third of a percentage point to 5.1 per cent. The gains were due to more jobs in the service-producing sector. Alberta held steady compared to July.
