Government investing in Thunderchild First Nation community

Thunderchild First Nation is receiving funding for a new Wellness Centre. Both the Government of Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing a total of $18 million to this project. This new building will offer services such as a dentist and doctor’s office, pharmacy, childcare facilities and an ice rink. The Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, François-Philippe Champagne, says this project will support local growth.

“Community hubs like the Thunderchild Wellness Centre are the backbone of our communities and important focal points for activities that bring people together and help them flourish and grow,” said Champagne. “The Government of Canada recognizes that Indigenous peoples are marginalized when it comes to getting access to health services and is determined to close the gap.”

The main focus of the centre will be serving the First Nations community, however it will be open to all. Areas surrounding Thunderchild First Nation like Turtleford, St. Walburg, Edam, Spruce Lake, Mervin, Live Long, and Glaslyn will be served from the Wellness Centre. Jeremy Harrison, Meadow Lake MLA and Trade and Export Development Minister, states that the Government of Saskatchewan is proud to be investing in this program.

“A great deal of work has gone into planning for this project. Once built, the wellness centre will help improve quality of life and give the community a new facility they can be proud of.”

The Wellness Centre will provide easy access to services that are difficult to currently get in the area. There is no current completion date for the new centre.
