The Lloydminster Royal Canadian Legion is closer to having its roof repaired after a recent donation from the 100 Men Lloydminster. The group, consisting of community members in and around the city, made their recent donation on September 10th.
The Legion and the Men’s Shelter, who was looking to secure funding towards their expansion plans, presented the reason they were in need of the groups $3,500 donation.
President of the Lloydminster Royal Canadian Legion #39, Richard Dixon spoke at the meeting about the 30-year-old Legion building that has a roof badly in need of repairs. He says costs are estimated between $130,000 to $150,000 in order to make necessary fixes to the structure.
“The last few years we have patched what we could on the roof, but this spring every pretty much let go. When we had heavy rain, we had flooding coming in from all different parts of the roof coming into the building and destroying things.”
The volunteer group, which consists of 110 active members, will be holding fundraisers in the coming months with proceeds going towards the repairs. The group relies on memberships dues, donations and events as they do not receive government funding.
“It’s absolutely incredible to know there are organizations out in our own community, like that, that support non-profit organizations,” says Dixon.
Executive Director of the Social Action Coalition Society, Valerie Lazicki explained to 100 men Lloydminster that a new drop-in centre will be opening in October to accommodate the 100 meal per day volume they’re receiving at the Men’s Shelter. If they received the donation, the money would go towards touching up the new centre at St.John’s Anglican church.
During the meeting, 100 Men also received an update from the Bea Fisher Foundation, who received of the groups $3,400 June donation. The non-profit brought photos of a deck built on one of their homes for clients to have easier access to the back yard.
In total, over 18 meetings, 100 Men Lloydminster has donated $104,470 to non-profits in Lloydminster and area. The group meets once every three months to hear from not-for-profit groups in the city. Members are asked to donate four hours and $400.00 to help
