Community reminded to be cautious after fake “RCMP” fraud

Lloydminster RCMP is reminding residents to be cautious after an attempted fraud was reported on September 25.

An unknown person had contacted the victim posing as the Lloydminster RCMP saying her social insurance number had been compromised and all her money needed to be converted to Bitcoin. The caller then asked the victim to send the wallet to the “RCMP”. The victim contacted RCMP after realizing she was being scammed.

f you believe that you are the victim of a scam it’s very important to contact your local RCMP Detachment,” says Constable Michael Hagel. “It can be quite stressful, but we have investigative tools at our disposal that will stop these people before they can scam anyone else.”

The Lloydminster RCMP suggests residents practice safety tips when it comes to online safety and fraud prevention mounties say they will never ask the community for money over the phone or request payment in cryptocurrency.
