Relay For Life makes changes for 2020 event

The Relay for Life is changing things up for its next year. The Relay For Life Lloydminster committee met on September 29 to plan the event for 2020 and decided to change the date and time to allow more people to participate.

The 21st Relay For Life will take place during the day on June 13, 2020. The event has usually been a nighttime event on the last weekend of May. Community Chair Alyssa Shillington says moving the event will allow for better weather and opens up opportunities for more activities.

“It is an outside event, so we want people to come out and enjoy themselves,” says Shillington.

The event is also planned to take place on a Saturday evening as opposed to the usual Friday night.

“It starts at 3 p.m. and goes until 11 p.m. because we still need to have sometime in the evening to do the luminary ceremony properly,” says Shillington. “People end up leaving at a certain point in the evening but we want people to be able to stay for the entire event and not leave partway through. So hopefully this will counteract that and make it easier for people to stay.”

The Relay For Life is an annual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society which brings together cancer survivors and supporters. Last year the event raised over $17,000 in Lloydminster.

As the event is set to take place next summer, Shillington is looking for people to take part in planning the event by joining the committee.

“We’re already double the number of committee members than we had last year. Ideally, we have 13 spots to fill including the chairs and we have eight people in spots right now.”

People interested in helping can contact the group through their Facebook page or by emailing [email protected] or [email protected].
