HRHS provides post-secondary options with college fair

Holy Rosary High School students are looking towards their future post-secondary careers.

The school hosted 15 institutions from across Alberta on November 7 for a college fair. Five hundred students from grades 10 to 12 spoke with representatives to gather more information on the different programs offered by the institutions.

Career Counsellor Doug Abrosimoff says the fair gives Lloydminster students the same chance to learn about the universities in the province.

“It’s important that people here in the midwest have the same opportunities as people in large cities.”

Abrosimoff says about 90 students made a trip to the University of Saskatchewan but not all students get that opportunity. The fair allows more students to be able to plan their future by talking to someone face-to-face about the programs they’re interested in.

“This is the first time Mount Royal from Calgary has been to our school in years. Here’s a chance to meet someone with one of the best nursing programs or if you’re interested in athletics or engineering. This is a chance for you to be involved, make a contact, take a card and see what the future holds.”

For grade 10 students it’s an introduction to the world outside of high school. Grade 11 students it could be a way of reinforcing their studies by looking at their marks and what marks are needed to get into a certain program.

“A smaller place like Lloydminster, we are competitive. We can do these kinds of things and our kids do very well when they leave our high schools in Lloydminster and area.”

The school has already brought in universities from Saskatchewan earlier this year. Abrosimoff says most grade 12 students he’s talked to have applied to post-secondaries for admission.
