A Lloydminster family continues to bring the holiday spirit to the community after seven years. The Lights and Sounds of Christmas house are on full display until January 7, 2020, raising money for local initiatives.
For almost a decade, Jerry Frank has used his own money to turn his house into a Christmas light show. He says the inspiration came from a Youtube video.
“I saw the video and thought that would be cool to do, what’s the cost to even get started with something like that. Not starting on a big scale.”
In 2013, the event started off with 1400 lights. Now, Jerry says his property has from 60,000 to 70,000 lights during the holidays.
The light show is a collaborative effort amongst the Frank family. Not only is their home covered with lights that are programmed to specific songs, but Jerry’s backyard is also beautifully lit up due to the help of his daughter.
The event has seen an increase in popularity through donations each year. Jerry says the event raises around $3,000 every year for local initiatives after the inaugural year saw $1,100 raised. This year’s proceeds from the light show go towards Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster, The Goat’s Christmas Wish and the Gift of Christmas.
“[We thought] if we are going to do something like this we might as well see who can benefit. We knew there would be people who want to donate to something. We kept our eyes open during that first planning year and decided on the three charities. They all fill different needs inside the community.”
The Lights and Sounds of Christmas picked up its first sponsor this year from Musgrave. The agency provides the family with a sea can to store decorations during the offseason.
The Lights and Sounds of Christmas kicked off on November 23rd running until January 7th from 5 p.m to 10 p.m Donations can be left inside the mailbox in front of the Frank residence located at 5704 30 st.
