Ugly Christmas Sweater party aims to help people in need

Two Lloydminster residents are looking to brighten up the city this festive season.

Cherryl Ross and Carmen Webster are hosting the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party on December 20 with all proceeds going to people in the city who are struggling to get by.

Webster says the money will go to support members of the community who are in need of help but aren’t able to ask for it.

“It’s to ensure that the person who needs help can remain anonymous. They don’t have to say who they are and in that way, they can retain their integrity and their pride. No one likes to ask for help.”

“We’ve both done a little bit of homework and kept our ears to the ground and we have some families in our community who may have slipped through the cracks,” says Ross.

They also hope to build up awareness of the local downtown businesses who have provided gifts and sponsorships for the event.

Ross says there a unique twist to the party. They will be running a game of Fear Factor during the party.

“Some questions and concerns came up. What does Fear Factor have to do with Christmas or ugly sweaters for that matter? I’m not sure but we’re on board with that part of it.”

The pair says the event will be inclusive and have set up designated drivers and will provide them with free hot chocolate.

“It’s not just a party for everybody to go out and have a good time which we want people to do but it’s also supporting those who need help this time of year and all year long. There’s a purpose for the party aside from going out for a night,” says Webster.

The party will be held at the Lloydminster Legion at 4505 49 Ave on December 20. It starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 1 a.m.

Tickets cost $25 each or two for $40 and are available at the Lloydminster Legion or by contacting Ross and Webster through their Facebook page. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the party.
