Parents give back to St. Mary’s students and staff with Christmas lunch

St. Mary’s Elementary School is making sure all their students are fed with a holiday feast.

Over 470 students and staff members received a full Christmas dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes and vegetables for lunch. The meal is organized and cooked by parents of the students and members of the School Community Council.

SCC chair Corri Monnich has been a part of the council for the past five years and says the tradition started before her time there.

“The kids and staff are very appreciative and it builds that community environment. It’s where you want your kids to be as part of a community.”

Monnich says it shows their appreciation for the students hard work as well as the efforts made by the staff and what they do on a daily basis. Grade 7 student Eunice Iyiola says she’s thankful to the parents for spending some time at the school and cooking a meal for the students and staff.

“I make lunch for my family for school and it was chill knowing I didn’t have to make anything for school and I think the food tastes good. I think everybody will enjoy it. I enjoy it.”

The SCC helps the school with the talent fair, literacy supports and getting guest speakers to the school. It also funds a scholarship for former students of St. Mary’s. Monnich encourages parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get involved with their schools SCC.

“They may just need to ask. Even if it’s an hour once every couple of months, we could always use the help.”
