ACAC postpones futsal championships at Lakeland College

The ACAC futsal championships have been postponed due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19. Lakeland College was set to host both the men’s and women’s championships from March 13 to 15

Men’s Soccer and Futsal coach Kevin Wagner says they are taking precautions to ensure everyone’s health and safety.

“We’re uncertain how it could negatively affect [people] so as a result it’s been postponed.”

“This is uncharted territory in a lot of regards. Whether it’s rescheduled or not remains up in the air at this point. For everyone’s safety, it’s not going to happen this weekend,” he adds.

Wagner says the teams are disappointed with the cancellation because of the short window they have to play the sport. However, he says they understand why the decision was made.

“Soccer is a two semester program whereas in futsal the main part of it is in March. Our last main competition was in October and there’s been a lot of time, energy and excitement that’s gone into it and they won’t get to show their stuff out in front of a home crowd.”

Eights teams on both sides were to play in this weekend’s tournament. Last year the tournament was hosted in Lethbridge.
