RCMP making services safer for public, officers during COVID-19

The RCMP says they will continue to provide full services during the COVID19 Pandemic, but will be re-tooling how in order to protect everyone’s health and safety.

In a letter to residents, Lloydminster RCMP Officer in Charge Inspector Lee Brachmann says changes are coming to which calls police respond to with physical officers. While on a call with dispatchers, questions about  the severity of the incident and  COVID-19 risk should be expected.

If it’s determined that the concern doesn’t require immediate police presence, Constable Michael Hagel says that police will be taking the information over the phone and following up.

“We have what’s called a ‘Callback Unit’ and you’ll be talking to a police officer. If it’s something low priority for the police officer to attend, they’ll take the name, take the file. But if it’s something that’s more serious, you can guarantee the police are coming to help you out.”

The Lloydminster RCMP is also limiting access to it’s building during this time. At this time, non-essential criminal record checks and civil fingerprints are being postponed. However, if someone working in health care and needs an urgent criminal record or vulnerable sector check will be processed as a priority.

People visiting the RCMP building are asked to call the dispatch line (780-808-8300) where their COVID-19 risk will be determined, and how best to help them will be determined.

Constable Hagel adds that they are taking protective steps as more non-essential services temporarily vacate their storefronts.

“You’re going to see a very increased police presence, know that there’s going to be lots of cars out on the road who are looking for stuff to do.”
