Lloydminster Big Brothers/Big Sisters keeping up connections digitally

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lloydminster is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by keeping up their connections virtually.

Since the physical distancing restrictions have been put in place, BBBS has been trying to keep operating as usual, working with the matches and keeping them in touch with their “little siblings” through various video calling services.

Service Director Jacqueline Weed says that BBBS staying open and connected is helping the kids keep a sense of normalcy in abnormal times, taking away social isolation and toxic stress.

“The kids are feeling socially isolated, they’re not in school, they’re not seeing their friends. So this is their connection to still have some support, which is really important.”

Despite working from home, BBBS is also still taking on new mentors. With these digital means in place, Weed says she’s seen several mentors still be able to do a wide range of activities.

“We have one match that baked together, virtually. So they each had the recipe and made a cake together while they were each online. We have another match that’s been playing Scrabble together, we have matches that have been reading a book together.”

Anyone looking to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, either by becoming a volunteer or making a donation, can get the ball rolling on their website.
