Alberta government allows for some registry services to be done remotely

Albertans are temporarily allowed to complete some registry services by phone, email, fax or mail.

The Government of Alberta says the exception is being made to limit the number of people visiting registry agents in person during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following services can now be done remotely:

  • All corporate registry services are available by fax and email
  • All personal property registry services are available by fax and email

Select motor vehicle services are available by telephone, fax, mail and email including:

  • One-year driver’s licence and ID card renewals with an existing photo
  • Driver’s licence and ID replacement or cancellation
  • Vehicle registration renewals if no changes are required to passenger vehicle or motorcycle registrations, one-year renewals can be done online
  • Duplicate vehicle registration certificates
  • Replacement expiry date stickers for licence plates
  • Vehicle registration transfers to a new vehicle
  • Driver abstracts
  • Specialty plate orders

Services registry agents can’t process remotely and need in-person service include:

  • New driver’s licence or ID card applications
  • Driver’s licence and ID card renewals requiring an updated photo
  • Vital Statistics services, such as ordering birth or death certificates
