North Battleford beginning recycling enforcement program

North Battleford has begun enforcement to cut down on waste being mixed in with recycles.

The City says that recycles mixed with waste can be incredibly costly in many ways. Blue bins that have also had regular garbage placed in them must immediately be taken to the landfill. They add that one wrongly filled bin has the possibility to contaminate an entire truckload of recyclable materials.

Starting June 1st, North Battleford will be enforcing fines for incorrectly filled blue bins. A first offence could net someone a $100 fine. From there a second infraction is a $200 fine, a third $300 and any after that could land someone a $5000 fine per additional offence. North Battleford’s City solicitor will be enforcing fines not paid through the court.

Recyclables diverted from the landfill, they say, will help extend the current cell’s lifespan at the Waste Management Facility and decrease operations costs.

Residents wanting to know more about what can and can’t be recycled are encouraged to make use of North Battleford’s “Recycle Coach” on both their website and downloadable as an app from the Apple or Android app store.
