Battlefords RCMP warning about CRA phone scam

A phone scam making the rounds in the midwest has found its way to North Battleford.

Battlefords RCMP has gotten several calls about scammers calling people, pretending to be a Canada Revenue or Service Canada agent. They tell the victim that their SIN number has been used for criminal purposes, and the RCMP is investigating the victim. They then instruct the victim to take all of their money out of the bank and that they will call back with a secure location to drop it off.

Later, the victim receives another call from someone, who is using computer programs to make the Battlefords RCMP number, 306-446-1720 show up on call display.

Police are warning people that this is a fraud, and they should not give any money over the phone, even if it appears the person on the other line is from a real business or organization. They add residents should be highly suspicious of unsolicited calls for money, and instead should hang up and call the RCMP or the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
