Holy Rosary students organize gift drive for Lloydminster Hospital

Students at Holy Rosary are holding a Christmas fundraiser.

Grade 9 students McKenzie Schlosser, Jordan Lee and Madison Pretty were given a project in their Christian Ethics class to do an initiative related to social justice. The girls started a drive called I Want to Go Home for Christmas, which collects non-gender specific gift items from the community to deliver to patients in the Lloydminster Hospital who have to stay over the holidays.

“Originally we were going to do something with the dog rescue that I work with,” Schlosser said. “But then I thought more about it, since they were basically all over Facebook and everyone’s donating everything we should do something a little bit different. So we decided to do something with the hospital, and then all of us came up with something for people to donate stuff, so we can give gifts to people that can’t go home for Christmas.”

Christian Ethics teacher Aubrey Pedlar says the gifts will likely have a large impact on their recipients.

“The people in the hospital are the ones who need extra attention and extra care and extra love, and I think that’s why the project that they chose is so unique,” Pedlar said. “People get gifts at Christmas all the time, but it’s the people in the hospital that need that extra support, and pick-me-up, and so I think that’s why it’s important that these girls are doing this… It’s a small gift, and we would even rather have somebody give 15 small gifts than one huge gift, because we are just trying to bring a smile to people’s faces.”

The deadline for collection is Tuesday, December 22, and the girls hope to deliver the gifts on Wednesday, December 23.
