29-year-old B.C man identified as solider shot during exercise at CFB Wainwright

The soldier fatally shot during a live-fire exercise at CFB Wainwright has been identified as Corporal James Choi by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Choi was shot during the exercise Friday night around 10 PM, according to information from the Canadian Armed Forces. He was taken to Wainwright hospital and then transferred to another in Edmonton. He succumbed to his injuries Saturday morning. A four-year member of the forces and trained infantry solider, Choi was 29 years old when he passed away.

In information also confirmed by CAF Sunday morning, Choi was a visiting a member of the Royal Westminster Regiment, based in New Westminster, B.C. At the time of the incident, Cpl Choi was working with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry for fall continuation training, focused on light infantry skills.

Minister of National Defense Harjit Sajjan, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,  Canadian Army Commander Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre and Chief of the Defence Staff General Jonathan Vance all honoured Choi’s service in the CAF and offered condolences and support to Choi’s family.

The incident remains under investigation.
