Elk Point RCMP charge man in death of Saddle Lake First Nation woman

A 23-year-old man has been charged in the death of a Saddle Lake First Nation woman.

Elk Point RCMP received a report of a woman’s body located outside of Frog Lake First Nation on December 26 just before 4 p.m. Officers launched an investigation and identified the woman as Louanne Martha Cardinal. They then gathered witness statements with help from the Eastern Alberta District General Investigation Section and Crime Reduction Unit.

The Major Crimes Unit was deployed and took over the investigation on December 28. An autopsy was conducted as well as more interviews and multiple scenes were examined.

Following the investigation, Trevor Moyah of Frog Lake First Nation was arrested on December 30 and charged with manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm the next day.

He remains in custody and will appear in St. Paul Provincial Court on January 7.
