Saskatchewan jury trials postponed until end of April due to COVID-19

The date jury trials will resume in Saskatchewan has been pushed again, this time until the end of April.

The trials were first postponed by Saskatchewan’s Courts of Queen’s Bench back in November due to a worsening COVID-19 situation. This is the second time that that extension has been continued.

People on trial in Criminal cases set to begin before April 30th can re-elect to have a judge-alone trial, which means the trial will move ahead on the already planned timeline. People who still elect to have a jury trial will be granted rescheduling priority.

According to a statement by Chief Justice Martel Popescul via Global News,  the move is to ensure people have access to the justice system, while also balancing that with people’s health.

Popescul adds the situation will continue to be monitored, and the directive adapted where needed.
