LGCC approved for final stage of golf course upgrades

A three-year plan to improve the Lloydminster golf course is entering its final stage as local golfers prepare to tee up this season.

City council approved upgrades to the Lloydminster Golf and Curling Centre’s (LGCC) irrigation and electrical systems which will replace the originals on the back nine of the course and the driving range tee box and green. Double D Industries Ltd. DBA Aqua Lawn Sprinkler was awarded the $550,000 contract with most of the funding coming from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative grant.

The LGCC irrigation system was installed in the first nine holes in 1984 with the rest of the system being put in place over the next seven years. At the time of installation, contractors did not take the shift in landscape into account and the sprinklers moved over the years leading to poor coverage in some areas. The entire system replacement was split into three parts due to budgetary constraints and work started in 2019. The upgrades will also reduce water waste and provide a better quality of service for golfers.

“This will deal with a lot of the issues that I and other members of council have heard about at the golf course and other members of administration have clearly heard it. It’ll be a long developed improvement that will pay back over a long period of time,” says Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

Work is expected to start as soon as the frost thaws in the ground. If public health guidelines allow for golfers to return to the course, Aalbers asks for patience while construction is underway.

“This is an improvement that’s going to last 30 years so you might have to have a few games where it’s inconvenient or it might affect one hole at a time over the summer. The time frame is two months give or take weather.”
