Onion Lake RCMP charge two after multi-detachment pursuit

The Onion Lake RCMP have charged two suspects after they allegedly shot at a home, and took officers on a pursuit around the area.

Around 9:30 AM on April 10th, police were called to a home on the Onion Lake Cree Nation that was shot at. The family inside was not hurt and able to seek safety at a neighbour’s home while officers responded.

The suspects drove off from Onion Lake towards Lloydminster, with several officers in pursuit. Officers from Onion Lake, Maidstone, Lloydminster, Kitscoty and Elk Point were dispatched, along with The RCMP Canine unit and Edmonton Air Services to aid in the search.

In the end, the suspects were located and arrested without incident. Numerous charges have been laid against 23-year-old Layne Pahtayken of the Onion Lake Cree Nation, including:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  •  Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon or restricted weapon
  • Possession of weapon obtained by crime
  • Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
  • vehicle theft
  • Mischief over $5,000, Damage to property,
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Discharge of a firearm with intent
  • Six counts of failure to comply with undertaking condition

A second suspect, 20 year old Gerome Christopher Okemow of the Onion Lake Cree Nation has also been accused of a slew of alleged offenses, including:

  •  Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon or restricted weapon
  • Possession of weapon obtained by crime
  • Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
  • Theft of a truck
  • Adult Mischief over $5,000 – Damage to property

Both of the accused will appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on April 15th. The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the North Battleford RCMP Detachment, the Underwater Recovery and Forensic identification sections.
