A Lloydminster Comprehensive High School initiative in support of the Lloydminster Interval Home is receiving some provincial recognition.
The high school was awarded for their Rudolph’s Round-Up program, which raises many different types of donations for the Lloydminster Interval Home’s clients.
For their work, they were given the Public Schools of SK Student Citizenship Award. LCHS was one of three schools across Saskatchewan to get the inaugural award.
Leadership Instructor Dwayne Jeffery says the students work in several different ways during the campaign to support the Interval Home.
“Families often leave their home [when they are] in crisis with nothing more than the clothes on their back, and as the Interval Home tries to help them through these tough times, we help them with Christmas presents, birthday presents for the whole year, and with supplies to move back out.”
The students also stepped up Rudolph’s Round-Up to meet the added demand brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This involved them working with other schools in the LPSD to raise donations when possible as they did their own Christmas fundraiser as well. LCHS students also put up community donation boxes across the city.
Jeffery says the students involved with Rudolph’s Round-Up he’s connected with were very excited to receive the award, but also to be able to continue the event despite the ongoing pandemic.
“[The award] is a piece to recognize a year that was complete chaos. The kids have struggled, K-12, with all these issues, and to be able to be a part of the community, and remind yourself that this is just a temporary year and a half, a blip of your long life, this project helped do that.”
The students are already making plans for next year’s Rudolph’s Round-Up, and have high hopes they’ll be able to be more involved in person when the pandemic is over.
