Public art advisory committee applications due this Friday

With the deadline to apply being this Friday, artist Brandi Hofer is drumming up support for people to serve on the Public Art Advisory Committee.

Hofer said she’s proud of the City for taking the steps to set up the committee which will create the eligibility requirements for public art, make adjudications and recommendations to the City and lead ongoing maintenance of public art.

Hofer spoke about mural projects which she said are interactive allowing the community to connect. On the importance of art to the community she pointed out the rock snake project which wound its way through the community this Summer.

“A huge thing was the rock snake; the rainbow rocks on the path. Someone did something positive and people got around it. A lot of people added and they had thousands of painted rocks in one spot. That’s just a perfect example of how something so small ignited this fire in the community.”

The public art policy sets out the process for the City to acquire public art and maintain it.

Hofer is encouraging community members to put their names forward to serve.

“So I hope people can join this committee and I think there are some lovely individuals who will suit the board. I am really proud of the people who will give their time and energy to serving the community.”

The committee is to be set up by November 15th. More details including the application process and terms of reference can be found on the City’s website.
