Stubbs sees importance of united Conservatives for Lakeland riding

Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs is congratulating MP Candice Bergen on being elected as Interim Leader of the federal Conservative Party of Canada.

In a statement, Stubbs welcomed the election of Bergen whom she sees as a “capable and steady champion who will unite our caucus” and fulfill its obligations as the country’s official opposition.

Stubbs says she is looking forward to continuing to work alongside party members and noted the importance of the Bergen choice by the party.

“The need for a strong, united, principled, and genuine Conservative party in Canada has never been more important for Lakeland and for all of Canada. I believe the livelihoods of the people I represent, and the long-term unity of our country depends on it.”

She spoke to the effect on the confidence of members, volunteers, and voters saying this “has been shaken because of words, actions, and positions taken during the past year and a half.”

She addressed the issue saying in her representation of the riding she has “sought always to oppose harmful policies and decisions, no matter who proposes it; to speak truth to power and to hold ourselves to the same standards we expect of our opponents.”

For the Lakeland riding, Stubbs expressed the hope that the combination of her track record and the opportunities that now lie ahead will engage the people of the various communities and that she will always choose Lakeland.

Stubbs spoke about staying true to the party’s core principles and that conservatives “have been most successful” by being steadfast in representing “the views and ideas of constituents.”

In addressing the issues leading up to the election of Bergen, Stubbs says, “When MPs take an extraordinary action, people can trust it has been done for grave reasons.”

She expressed confidence that the new leader will unite the party and Canada as they look to form the nation’s next Conservative government.
