With $100,000 on the line, the city’s recreation planners indicate that Lloydminster is third in Alberta and 11th in the country with 8 days to go to decide Canada’s most active city and win the ParticipAction challenge.
The city has recently put out its Trails and Sidewalk Master Plan update from the GPC meeting on June 13th. The aim being to gain insight to grow the trails and sidewalk network in the city.
Councillor Michael Diachuk shares he is a big fan of the trails at Bud Miller Park. He notes one of the challenges is maintaining these surfaces especially for mobility-challenged users.
Diachuk says people are seeking more creative challenges as they raise their game.
“What I’ve heard from users that run and others that bike is, how can we identify those trails in such a way that people can use them in a much easier way. So they will log on and find a 5k-run or a 10k-run and begin to run around the city and create different routes for themselves.”
He says runners want to switch it up and have different trails to follow.
City officials are also reminding residents to download the ParticipAction App and log their activity for the city to garner the top prize.
Diachuk says their Art Committee is looking at adding art to the city’s trail system.
“An art walk within the city. So we are looking at potentially commissioning some works of art that will be placed along particular spots on the walkway, and again similarly we would want to see that art walk being highlighted through some map and and accessing it through the city website.”
The councillor anticipates seeing three-dimensional art being added to walkways and trails to link up outdoor activity with artwork.
Residents may follow the city’s trails and parks online. Additionally runners and cyclists are using apps like Strava and All Trails for an interactive tour of the trails of Lloydminster.
