Shortage of specialty infant formula prompts advisory

With Canada facing a shortage of specialty infant formula, the Saskatchewan Health Authority is advising parents to limit their purchase to medical needs only.

This as officials want to save supplies for babies with allergies and medical conditions. They also indicate there is no shortage of regular infant formula.

SHA says the temporary shortage was caused by the closure of Abbott Nutrition’s U.S.-based formula manufacturing plant and is affecting all of Canada. They expect supply to grow again when production resumes in the coming months.

Authorities add parents should speak to a health-care professional to discuss their concerns if their child has allergies or special formula needs.
