Lloydminster hosting ball provincials July-long

Canada Day until Sunday will see Alberta provincial ball being played at the five diamonds on the east side of the Border City.

The tournament, hosted by the Driven Energy U19 Lloydminster Liners, will welcome the best teams in the province. The opener is set for Friday July 1st at 11 a.m. with the hometown Liners lining up against Calgary.

Head coach Donnie Atkinson says they will look to go deep.

“We finished fourth with the 19s. This year the top three go to nationals. So it’s pretty important for us to show well in our home park. The big goal is to go in as Alberta one if we can.”

The evening match will follow at 7 p.m. The Lloydminster team is on the diamond again Saturday at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Atkinson says ideally they’re looking to get into the one-two game on Sunday morning.

“There’s six teams in our division and anyone can beat anyone any day. It’s just putting it together at the right time. Getting hot on Friday, Saturday and staying strong on Sunday.”

He adds the Driven Energy Legion Ball Park will have food trucks and refreshments to make for a great weekend of ball.

The weekend schedule can be found on the Softball Alberta website.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
