Axial Physio opens in Lloydminster

Physiotherapy patients in Lloydminster have a new option to assist their recovery with the opening of Axial Physio and Health on the city’s south side off 50 Avenue.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers was on hand for Monday’s ribbon cutting and noted the importance of the new investment particularly in the health services sector.

“We need to all look after ourselves and our health. It’s very important, and having a facility like this and the more people that are able to help us as we age. It doesn’t matter what age you are, or recovering from a sports or auto injury, or simply an accident at home. That physio or massage, those kinds of things are all critical to ensuring your full recovery.”

The need for more physiotherapy options is what prompted Devish Kumar to start a new physio and health facility in Lloydminster. The physiotherapist came to Lloydminster at the start of the pandemic and worked in multiple clinics both public and private.

“I had patients coming to me and they would tell me that they have been waiting for months to get into physio, because they had no idea where to go. The public clinics were busy. Some of the private clinics were super busy and they couldn’t get in to see a physiotherapist for months. And by the time they get their appointment, the problem is half-resolved because they have taken so many pain killers, which is not good when you are taking more than a certain amount. That’s not good for your body.”

Kumar says shoulder and knee injuries are the most common issues that he sees. As well, the new clinic will offer treatment for sports related injuries as Kumar sees a lot of young athletes, especially football and hockey kids who want to get back to the game.

“They are eager to go back to the game, but is it the right time for them? We need to explain to them that you need to stop a little bit. Take care. Do good rehab with us and once you’re ready, we will send you back to the game.”

Kumar says the team at Axial includes the services of Allyssa MacPhaden who will offer recovery for postpartum wellness and support after pregnancy. macPhaden is an exercise therapist with certification in prenatal and postnatal rehab.

“Allyssa is going to do an assessment to figure out what you need and based on that she will make a tailor-made program to make you independent at home and free to do what you want to do without hurting yourself.”

Axial Physio is located at 1724-50 Avenue.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
