Trio face charges related to emergency alert

Three people are facing charges after shots were fired in the early hours of Sep. 6 in Lloydminster and RM of Britannia.

Lloydminster RCMP say they got a report about 2:45 a.m. that shots were fired at a home and a black, newer model Ford Mustang may be involved An alert was sent to nearby RCMP detachments to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

At 3:49 a.m., Maidstone RCMP got a report of shots fired at a home in the RM of Britannia. Police say a black Mustang approached the home. Several occupants came out of the suspect vehicle and started checking vehicles parked in the driveway.

The homeowner came to the door and a gun was fired toward the homeowner. The bullets struck the house. The occupants were not physically injured, say police.

At 4:08 a.m., Maidstone RCMP were informed that occupants of a black Mustang attempted to steal fuel from a home in the RM of Britannia. Maidstone RCMP along with Saskatchewan resources increased efforts to locate the suspect car and at about 7 a.m., Saskatchewan RCMP issued an emergency alert about the incident.

Maidstone RCMP began receiving reports the vehicle was seen leaving Lloydminster and heading to Onion Lake Cree Nation. Saskatchewan and Alberta RCMP units, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers and conservation officers from the Provincial Protective Services Branch, Wilton Police Service, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Lloydminster Rescue Squad joined efforts in the search.

When officers found the vehicle they used a spike belt to stop it. Further investigations determined it had been reported as stolen from Paynton on Sept. 5.

Police say the occupants fled the scene, but two suspects were later found in a camper and arrested in Onion Lake. A third suspect was located and arrested in a forested area close to where the car was disabled. Later that evening, two more female suspects were located and arrested in the community.

Blaire Chief 24 from Onion Lake, 19-year old Jessica Fox from Poundmaker Cree Nation and a 15-year-old male youth from North Battleford are each charged with:

  • 1 count, resist obstruct peace officer
  • 1 count, flight from peace officer
  • 1 count, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

Fox and the male youth appeared in Battleford Provincial Court on Sept. 9. Chief is due at the same court on Sept. 12.

Two other individuals arrested were released without charges. Maidstone RCMP are continuing to investigate.
