Residents can expect to see the Lloydminster girl guides in the community selling more than just the regular cookies as they fundraise for an upcoming tour to B.C.
The group with some eighty-years service to youth development in the area will be rolling out several events as they save up for next summer’s trip.
Samantha Oikawa with the Lloydminster District Girl Guides says the group has 24 members with a waitlist of six. As well they have 20 girls in Brownies with two on the waitlist. The group starts from Sparks which covers ages 5-6, Brownies are 7-8, Guides are ages 9-11, Pathfinders are 12-15 and Rangers are 15-17 years old.
She says they are taking the guides, pathfinders and rangers, comprising 26-girls and six-adults to Vancouver and Victoria for seven-days next July 3-10.
“It’s a travel opportunity that we have provided our girls to see a different part of our country and explore different areas that they might not have access to. We plan on flying and then using city-transit to get around both Vancouver and Victoria – and also we will be taking the ferry between Vancouver and Vancouver Island.”
The educational know-your-country tour was one of four choices with the girls deciding on B.C.
The group is hosting a dessert bingo at the Moose Lodge on Saturday Oct. 22 from 6 p.m. It features as well a silent auction, new year’s raffle and a 50/50 draw.
The guide leader shares about the importance of the youth movement.
“So guides right now is an opportunity for girls to be a voice – to plan what they want to do in their meetings. It’s a progressive program from Sparks to Rangers and the girls get progressively more involved in the planning aspects of the activities that they want to do as they move through the ranks.”
Oikawa who is originally from B.C. has been “guiding” for five years. She says they have been fundraising over this summer and more events will be planned going into next year.
