Christmas lights return to Kiwanis Park Sunday afternoon

For a fourth year, Kiwanis Lloydminster will light up Kiwanis Park for the Christmas season.

On Sunday Nov. 27, official speeches begin at 4:15 p.m. with the lights being turned on at about 4:45 p.m.

Chair of the Festival of Lights committee, Vera Gallant says that even over the COVID restrictions, the lights at the park “brought a lot of joy and hope to the community.”

Gallant is looking forward to the community being present.

“We will be serving hot chocolate and cookies prior to that (the official lighting at 4:45 p.m.) – and we will have Christmas Carols being played. People can come, sing along, just visit or dance.”

Gallant says the lights will stay on for the Christmas season.

“The park will be lit every day from around 4:30 until about 10:30 p.m. That will run for the whole month of December. We will shut it off probably around January 4th, or so.”

Gallant says in the past some community groups used the decor at the park to host events and they are open to that option again this year.

“Three years ago, several pastors used the park and had their sermons video taped in front of the Nativity scene. We have had a dance studio put on their dance right at the park – the theme was Nutcracker; and we have a huge nutcracker there so they used the park for their dance recital.”

Any local groups interested in hosting holiday events may get in touch with the Lloydminster Kiwanis.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
